Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse is a movie that caught me completely by surprise. I hadn’t heard too much about it, prior to seeing it, and had no expectations. I was blown away. I would probably rank it in my top 5 favourite animated movies EVER (I love animated movies – so it’s a big deal). The art design and animation were nothing short of spectacular and the characters were hilarious and heart-felt. Can you tell I LOVE IT?! Honestly, I don’t think I can fault it. I knew I had to get my hands on a copy ASAP and check out the special features.

You can check out our reviews of it herehere and here (we loved it a lot OKAY!?)

The voice cast are an amazing team including:  Shameik Moore as Miles Morales alongside Jake Johnson (New Girl) as Peter B. Parker, Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Mahershala Ali (Green Book) as Miles’ Uncle Aaron, Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) as Jefferson Davis, Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie) as Aunt May, Luna Lauren Velez (“How To Get Away with Murder”) as Rio Morales, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Mary Jane, John Mulaney (Big Mouth) as Spider-Ham, with Nicholas Cage (The Croods) as Spider-Man Noir, Kathryn Hahn (Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation) as Doc Ock and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) as the villain Kingpin.

Bonus Materials Include:

  • We Are Spider-ManExploring and celebrating one of the key themes of the film, We Are Spider-Man takes a deep dive into the diversity of the characters and aspirational core that any person from any gender or cultural background can wear the mask.

This is a nice little piece summing up the importance of sharing the ‘Miles Morales’ story in today’s world. It made me realise just how awesomely relatable Miles Morales’ Spider-Man is, in a different way to any of the other iterations I’ve seen. It also gives us a few glimpses of the voice cast as they share their views on the character.

  • Spider-Verse: A New Dimension: With a stunning visual style and state-of-the-art animation designed to take the viewer into the pages of a comic, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is not only a love letter to comic books but a ground-breaking take on the super hero genre. Hear from the artists and filmmakers who pushed the boundaries of the art form as they discuss their journey.

This was actually so fascinating. I didn’t realise how intense being involved in the ‘look and feel’ of this film would have been and the crazy lengths they went to, to create a unique visual feel. They share the goal of being able to freeze any frame of the film and it look like a work of art. Well, my friends (I wish), goal achieved! SHEESH. This little featurette gives us a glimpse into how they did hand-drawing on top of CG and only animated every second frame to give the film a more comic-book ‘feel’.

  • The Ultimate Comics Cast: Enjoy this showcase of all of the fan favourite characters featured in the Spider-Verse and the spectacular cast who were chosen to bring them to life.

This might be my favourite nugget from the digital release. I ‘knew’ who the voice cast were, but seeing them in action – voicing the lines alongside the animations is super buzzy for my little brain. Jake Johnson and Nicholas Cage being particular highlights! This also gives a bit of insight into how they chose who would make up their awesome voice-cast and how much influence each actor had over the final result.

  • A Tribute to Stan Lee & Steve Ditko: Celebrate the amazing legacy and powerful spirit of the creators of Spider-Man.

This was really cool for a comic-book history noob like me! It gives a really nice look at the beginnings of Spider-Man and a little look into the achievements of the creators, Stan Lee and Steve Ditco. The team behind Into the Spider-Verse also get to geek out a little and share what Stan Lee meant to each of them individually. It’s a touching tribute.

  • The Spider-Verse Super-Fan Easter Egg Challenge: The Spider-Verse is loaded with Easter Eggs, from cameos to comics references. Fans are challenged to find them all!

Haha, I won’t spoil it for you, but there are A LOT of easter eggs and a huge amount of very random ones XD This featurette is especially cute because the team members presenting it are a little bit awkwardly stoked with themselves. I don’t know if that explains what I mean very well, but it’s super cute to see them so chuffed with all their little eggs!!!

  • Designing Cinematic Comics Characters: A breakdown of all aspects of the character design including costume, movement in animation, and distinct powers for each character.
    • Heroes & Hams: Meet the amazing Spider-people of the Spider-Verse.
      • Scorpions and Scoundrels: Explore the classic villains who wreak havoc on the Spider-Verse.

I loved this, because a lot of thought has gone into each and every aspect of the characters of the film and I now feel like I can appreciate each character 100 times more! Definitely shorter than I would have liked. It kind of dangles the carrot of information, until you’re truly invested and eager to learn more, and then cuts you off OUT OF NO WHERE.

  • Alternate Universe Mode: In this all-new viewing experience, discover alternate scenes, plotlines, characters, and more with the filmmakers as your guide.
  • 2 Lyric Videos
    • “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee
    • “Familia”  by Nicki Minaj & Anuel AA (feat. Bantu)

  • All-New Original Short “Spider-Ham: Caught In a Ham” It’s another normal day for Peter Porker, a.k.a. the Spectacular Spider-Ham, fighting bad guys and loving hot dogs, until a mysterious portal starts messing with the very fabric of his cartoon reality.

Spider-Ham is definitely a highlight of Into the Spider-Verse, and this little comic-short gives us an idea of the sorts of things he’d get up to in his universe. It also has a great little twist!

4K Ultra HD Disc Includes:

  • Feature film presented with High Dynamic Range and Dolby Atmos sound
  • Also includes the film and special features on the included high-def Blu-ray

All of this to say, if you’re a fan of the film, get your butt to the store (or open up a new tab in your browser) and grab yourself a copy asap!
