EA and Bethesda both had their presentations on yesterday. Here’s what happened.
Things we weren’t expecting
Quake, an apparently popular competitive multiplayer, is returning as Quake Champions.
A reboot of the series. A psychological space game from Arcane Studios, the guys behind Dishonoured and its sequel. You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity, but then the space station gets invaded by aliens.
Doom in VR is currently out, but in 2017 Fallout 4 will also be available on VR, with the HTC Vive.
For this week only, you can download and play the first level of Doom for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One to see if it’s your kind of game. I think it’s worth checking out.
Things we were expecting
Mass Effect: Andromeda
The new Bioware game set in the Mass Effect universe came up, as expected, and we got a bit more of a look at what the game is going to look like. Your character is leading an expedition to find a new place for humanity. After being in cryosleep you wake up to find yourself in Andromeda. Instead of humanity joining a new community of aliens, as was the theme in the last games, now you are the aliens.
Check out a behind the scenes video of the game:
Some juicy new gameplay that featured Emily’s powers was shown and I am super thrilled about this game. You get to choose whether you want to play as Corvo or Emily.
Nothing really new here, but we got a look behind the scenes of all the studios currently working on Star Wars games, including a sneak peek at some footage from Visceral’s Star Wars game headed by Amy Hennig. That’s set to come out in 2018, with another action-adventure Star Wars game coming from Respawn (Titanfall 2).
Take a look at this (and look out for that sneak peek gameplay footage!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5Eluilchyk
Titanfall 2 will be available on the PS4 as well as on Xbox One and will have a singleplayer campaign, not just a multiplayer.
Single player campaign trailer:
Three features were highlighted at the conference: destruction (basically destructible environments), vehicles (you can pilot armoured cars, tanks, trains, planes, and even behemoths) and dynamic weather (where the weather changes unpredictably). The Open Beta will become available later this Winter (for us Kiwis) and you can sign up for it here: https://www.battlefield.com/beta
In the meantime, E3 hosted the first mulitplayer livestream of Battlefield 1 which you can check out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0QXFtIRSU0
Elder Scrolls Legends
Card strategy game based in the Elder Scrolls universe that will be free to play and available on Android, iPhone, tablets, PC, and Mac.
I kind of want to give this its own little pocket. EA is starting up an initiative where they help out new developers with games they feel “deserve to be played.” They help with the whole process right through to marketing, but leave 100% of the profits to the developers. They showed off the first game to go through this program and it looks amazing.
You’re a cub and you don’t really know who you are. You explore the forest and meet extraordinary creatures and you realise everything has its own song. With each new song you learn you come closer to discovering who you are. But then the silent ones appear, corrupting the forest with their silence.

News and Updates
Skyrim Remastered for Xbox One and PS4. This presentation wins the award for best use of adjectives: “Volumetric God Rays.” The most exciting thing about this is that all mods created on PC will be available for both consoles!!
In related news, Fallout 4 mods are coming to PS4 as well as Xbox One and there are a couple of new things to look out for as well. Fallout 4 Contraptions, a new DLC coming next week, where you can build new stuff like elevators and sorting machines. And, wait for it, Fallout 4 Vault-Tec. Reminiscent of Fallout Shelter, you get to build your own vault and experiment on dwellers. That’s coming out in July. Fallout 4 Shelter will be adding a few new features as well, including the ability to send dwellers on quests, explore new places and interact with a new combat system. Oh, and it’s coming to PC.
Doom Snapmap will be getting an update with new props, visuals and the like for more customisation, and two new modes are coming to the multiplayer.
Elder Scrolls Online The Dark Brotherhood DLC is coming out next Tuesday. And the next update for the MMO will take away all level restrictions and content barriers (This Spring).
FIFA 17 is bringing in four Premiere League managers into the game and will be run on the Frostbite engine.
