E3: Highlights from EA Play

Just ahead of E3 (which officially runs between June 12-14), Electronic Arts has held its EA Play conference which was packed with updates on their current and soon to be released games. Here’s the highlights and latest trailers!

The narrative heavy, multiplayer RPG Anthem – said to be EA’s answer to Destiny – received a much awaited release date and it’s close! February 22nd 2019. With Casey Hudson back at the helm at Bioware, here’s hoping it’s going to be a return to form for the developers of the cinematic Mass Effect series. Hudson was the project director on the Mass Effect trilogy and, after leaving the studio in 2014, he returned last year in a new role as General Manager. Anthem will contain elements of both single player and multiplayer gaming, described by the team as “our world, my story”. You’ll be able to battle monsters with up to three friends, make choices, and then enter single player scenes where you experience the consequences of those choices as well as interact with NPCs. The developers also promised that the game would be loot box free with no pay to win mechanics. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Bioware can rediscover their spark with Anthem!

Battlefield V

A new Battlefield V multiplayer trailer was shown, still with female soldiers but sans prosthetics this time. The developers at DICE announced that the multiplayer would include a Battle Royale mode a la Fortnite. Players will also be happy to hear that there’s no premium pass this time around, and no loot boxes. At the end of the trailer there’s the hint of a possible story mode with what appears to be a young man being hugged by his mother, before she pushes him from a bridge, seemingly to evade capture by soldiers.

The big announcement for FIFA 19 is that it will feature the UEFA Champions League. It’s due to be released on September 28th of this year on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PC and Xbox One.

A free trial of FIFA 18 is also available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Battlefront II

Fans of Battlefront II will be happy to hear that the hotly awaited Clone Wars content is coming! This update will include new playable characters General Grievous, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker.

This announcement follows the recent release of the popular Ewok Hunt, a new gameplay mode where two players start as Ewoks, hunting stormtroopers and converting them to their tiny, furry kind until they escape or are wiped out.

Unravel Two

Unravel Two was announced and is available for purchase as of today! This sequel to Unravel, the unique, yarn based puzzle platformer, is heavily focused on cooperative, couch co-op gaming. It’s possible for one player to control both characters but it seems like the most fun will be had with two players. Seems like it could be a perfect one for couples who game together!

Sea of Solitude

Following their tradition of supporting Indie Developers with their EA Originals program, EA have partnered with a small, Berlin studio called Jo-Mei Games on this artistic looking game. Sea of Solitude is a third-person exploration game which examines the idea of loneliness manifesting as a physical monster. It appears to be very much a passion project from designer and “Vision Keeper” Cornelia Geppert, who spoke fervently about the game’s personal meaning to her and how “every human can at least somehow relate to or remember the feeling of being lonely.”

Sea of Solitude is due to be released early 2019.
