Allegiant Review

Action Drama Movies news Reviews Saskia Slider

Either Allegiant was a pretty average movie or I’m just getting tired of Dystopian future teen fiction (honestly never thought I would even consider that). It had all the right elements – strong female lead, bad guys, good guys, futuristic technology, romance, tough decisions, action… and yet it failed to grip me.

I haven’t read all the books, so maybe I’m missing something glaringly obvious – but I just don’t understand the whole premise for Allegiant. I’m not even going to try and explain what I don’t understand about it because I also don’t really care. It’s not that I was bored, I wasn’t! There was enough action, betrayal and stupid decision making to keep my eyes on the screen, but it really did just feel like an extended trailer for the final installment in the series (which is basically what it is since they’ve split the last book in two).

Shailene Woodley is great, I’m not blaming any of this on her. Allegiant is basically just a sequence of events, rather than a story involving character development so she didn’t have much to work with. I’m feeling hopeful that the fourth and final chapter in Tris’ story will get back to the characters and make me feel something for them again! Miles Teller chucked out some one liners in his role as the jerk Peter – all of which fell flat. Ansel Elgort was probably the stand out performance for me as Tris’ brother Caleb. Maybe it’s just because he has such a cute face, but he was the only character to stir any emotions as he strives to make it up to his sister for his ultimate betrayal in Insurgent.

If there was ever passion between Tris and Four it’s long gone! Allegiant has successfully wiped any memory of the chemistry that I was so sure had been in earlier films. I don’t get it. Shailene Woodley’s a babe Theo James’ a babe, surely babe + babe = hot sparks flying? Unfortunately not this time.

'The Divergent Series: Allegiant'

I know I’ve been pretty harsh but don’t let it put you off entirely. If you’re a fan of the series it’s definitely worth a watch. It has some pretty good action sequences and some interesting plot developments and does its job well. Its job being to set us up for the final installment in the Divergent Series.
