That Sony/Disney Spider-Man Kerfuffle and Gamescom 2019

Articles gamingnews Jaz news Slider

This week in the Pretty Much Weekly, we get down to some of the gritty details about the Sony/Disney Spider-Man deal, Gamescom 2019 has begun, and The Sims 4 releases a much anticipated game pack!

Tom Holland is officially leaving the MCU

I just want to set the record straight here. At this present time, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is no longer a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and in 2015 made a deal with Marvel/Disney where they would take 5% of the first day’s gross and 100% of the merchandising rights while Sony took the rest. Disney were also allowed to use Tom Holland in their movies without paying Sony anything.

Deadline reported that Disney tried to change that deal to 50/50 for Sony’s next Spider-Man film as well as some control over Sony’s other films made in the Spider-Man universe – all while still owning 100% of the merchandising rights. When Sony disagreed, the talks stalled.

According to Deadline, Sony did go back and offer another ratio, some news outlets reporting 70/30, but Disney said no to that.

IGN surmised that the talks were leaked as a means to move things forward, but Disney have since pulled Kevin Feige, Far From Home’s executive producer and the president of Marvel, from any future films made by Sony. This also means that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will no longer be a part of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony tweeted out a response to all this hullabaloo:

There are still two Spider-Man films in the works with Tom Holland (though perhaps not with the same director), and they will go ahead with or without Disney.

Though, I do sincerely hope that Disney and Sony come to some sort of reasonable agreement and we continue to see that guiding hand over what I think are the best live-action Spider-Man films to date.

Meanwhile at Gamescom 2019…

Gamescom is something I have never really followed before, but maybe I should because some really interesting stuff has come out of it! Let me give you some of my highlights:

Death Stranding got a new gameplay trailer! New characters, easter eggs and urinating mechanics were revealed.

PlayStation released ERICA, a live-action thriller game that was originally meant to be a PlayLink game though has similar mechanics and an app to go with it. It looks amazing and yes, you can play it right now!

Little Nightmares 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Switch!

And Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is getting an open weekend exclusively on the PS4, starting August 23rd, and you don’t even need to pre-order or sign up. Anyone can join!

Sims 4 gets magical!

Yes! The Sims 4 finally brings a magic game pack, bringing witches, potions, broomsticks and a whole new magical town to your Sims 4 world.

You’ve not long to wait! You’ll be able to purchase the Realm of Magic game pack on September 10th.

THX gets a new sound

Even if you don’t recognise the name THX, you will remember this sound, recall it vibrating the very bones inside your body as the movie you’re watching begins. Here, listen to this.

SEE, YOU DID KNOW IT. Well, THX has since revamped it somewhat, though is still retains that familiar Deep Tone hum.

Hardly news, but it is beautiful and an oddly cemented piece of film culture. So somehow, it felt important to pass this news on. And now you know!
